Fund development is imperative to the sustainability of a community service organization. It is crucial that organizations develop innovative strategies to reach out to their donors and supporters so as to foster a culture of giving with a focus on the mission and the deliverables of the organization.
Join us for a program that is designed to acquire a better understanding of key fundraising dynamics, a grasp of essential strategic choices, roles and responsibilities of Board members in fund development. Participants will be able to embrace these roles with less apprehension, and even less confusion, related to fund development. Learn unique techniques in this interactive learning experience, and network with like-minded professionals from the sector.
In this workshop, we will:
- Prompt interactive discussions about perceptions and individual experiences of fund development.
- Review the full range of what is encompassed in a mature and well-developed fundraising program.
- Explore the conditions and strategies that lead to choosing one fund development channel over another (including risks of over-dependence on one of two channels).
- Analyze the differences between seeking grants from funders and raising funds from individuals and businesses.
- Present the core idea and implications of a culture of philanthropy.
- Advocate for board members to embrace their fundraising roles in ways that are appropriate and meaningful for the organization, and realistic and satisfying for the individuals.

Larry Mattews, CFRE
President of KMA Consultants, Larry has more than 30 years’ experience in fundraising and organizational communications and has worked with more than 100 charities and not-for-profit organizations.
He began his career as a daily newspaper reporter in New Brunswick and Ontario, followed by 15 years of church denominational staff positions in international program management, communications, fundraising, and constituency research. In 1990, wanting to focus on fundraising, and serve a broad range of organizations, he became one of the founders of KMA.
Because of his experience in staff roles, on boards, as a volunteer and as a consultant, Larry brings a depth of understanding and a sense of realism to clients. He approaches fund development as an exercise in effective communications and healthy long-term constituency relations and is adept at finding ways to include stakeholders in projects and decisions.Capital campaigns and annual fund projects have been the centre of KMA’s and Larry work. But his experience in constituency research, communications and case development have been highly valued by many clients. He is known for his flexible, responsive style, and his commitment to clients.
